Ryoanji (Japan)

Ryōanji is a temple of the Myoshinji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism located in northwest Kyoto. The temple dates to the 15th century when it was an estate of the Fujiwara family and, later, Hosokawa Katsumoto who asked that the estate be converted to a Zen temple. Ryōanji is perhaps most famous for its dry landscape rock garden (karesansui) believed to have been laid out by an artist named Soami at the turn of the 16th century. The temple is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.
