One of the two primary, head temples of the Jōdo Shinshū school of Japanese Buddhism, Higashi Honganji was founded in 1602 when Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu split the Jōdo Shinshū school in two in order to diminish its power and influence. The temple is the location of Shinran Shonin's mausoleum and is the headquarters of Higashi Honganji school of Shin Buddhism, sometimes referred to as Honganji Otani. See also Nishi Honganji.
