Kiyomizudera (Clear Water Temple is built on the site of the Otowa Waterfalls and dertives its name from the fall's "pure water." The original shrine is said to have been consturcted in 778 by Enchin, a Buddhist priest, in honor of the Kannon Bosatsu (Bodhisattva of Mercy and Compassion). From Nara times, the temple was affiliated with the Hosso sect. Currently, members of Kitahosso sect serve as custodians of the sect. Kiyomizudera is one of Japan's most popular temples.</p>
