One of the two primary, head temples of the Jōdo Shinshū school of Japanese Buddhism, Nishi Honganji (Western Temple) is home to the Jōdo Shinshū Hongwanji-ha branch of Shin Buddhism. The temple was was established in 1321 as a mausoleum for the remains of Shinran Shonin, though his remains have since been relocated. The temple serves as the headquarters for the world-wide Nishi Hongwanji Shin Buddhist school. See also Higashi Honganji.
