Tofukuji (Rinzai/Japan)

One of the Gozan, or five great Zen temple in Kyoto, Tōfukuji is the head temple of the Tofukuji branch of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. Founded in 1236 by Kujo Michiie, its first abbot was the Zen monk Enni who had studied with the Chinese master Wuzhun Shinran. The temple includes a sanmon gate believed to be the oldest in Japan as well as several gardens reflecting the classic Zen aesthetic.
