Healing Rites, Divination, and Magical Protection
When Buddhism had a closer relationship to the state or ruling classes, monks were often employed to enact elaborate rituals for the protection of the empire or to divine the future. Laypersons also benefit from such rituals; and today there remains a popular trade in amulets in Thailand with images of important Buddhist teachers and saints.
